Unexpectedly binged this one in a couple of sittings and really enjoyed it. It started out slowish and I had misgivings about the premise and the title because what a slang choice.
Granted it also interested me as someone who is an MMORPG because you hear enough stories of catfishing to know the basic idea is very plausible.
But basic synopsis: The MC, Seyeong suffers a humiliating defeat at the hands of player Heejae that causes him to lose his guild and rage quit the game, vowing never to play again (he apparently spent a lot of rl cash on this game since it seems to have a really horrible cash shop/rmt problem going on lol). One day a former guildmate of his mentions she’s playing the game again and says he should log on.
He breaks down and does so, rolling a new female healer (game seems to be one where your character’s sex affects your stats) and ends up being invited to a guild, only to realize it’s run by Heejae lmao! Who instantly takes a liking to him! Which Seyeong is not having lmao! When Seyeong mentions this to his former guildmate, she suggests that he should act as Netkama: a male player who poses as a woman to scam another player out of his money, time and in game items.
Seyeong decides to try but... Heejae is that teasing type of character and Seyeong keeps flipping out on him, which just seems to amuse him further. But eventually, they have a bonding moment where they both unload a little about their pasts. Heejae is an orphan who grew up in an orphanage and Seyeong has cut his parents off due to them emotionally abusing him and taking advantage of him.
They kind of have a very cute relationship at this stage, but things get complicated when Heejae lends Seyeong a very high price item, something that is worth a crap load of rl money (I think like 18000 in us dollars o.o). His friend suggests that this would be the perfect time to sell the item and then scoot off, since there is a high level player, Yoona who wants that exact staff.
Seyeong wavers, but ultimately decides to go through with it, logging off and deleting his character. He also returns the actual rl money to Heejae’s bank account (Heejae had sent him some gifts before).
Things change when Heejae discovers him in rl and reveals himself to be kind of yandere, lmao? He’s offended that Seyeong did something so sick but also thinks he might be bi? And basically blackmails him into being Heejae’s boyfriend and going back into the game and letting Heejae live with him (I said I enjoyed it, I didn’t say it wasn’t problematic).
Despite that, they’re still growing closer and the last chapter had Heejae track Seyeong down after he ran out of the apartment on a cold day without proper outerwear to force a scarf on him lmao!
But what I like: I just like silly romance premises in general, but I like how well the premise and setting is utilized. The characters play the game and participate in raids and there’s a good reflection of things like status windows and the ways characters get around swears.
I also do like that despite the goofier aspects of Heejae being a teasing love interest and Seyeong being a tsundere, they actually are developing a genuine rapport with each other and I’m excited to see that explored. I even like the more problematic yandere moments just for the spice they had. Art is simplish in areas, but that’s alright.
Similar read is My Darling Signed on. Though Netkama Punch!!! spends more time online in comparison. But so far I’m having fun with this one and can’t wait to see what else it has in store.
